Associate Editor - National Team
Associate Editors are tasked with managing the day-to-day editorial workflow of their assigned beats, regions, and other areas of specialization as directed by their editor or team’s managing editor.
Associate Editors assist in the writing and editing of original and aggregated news stories, news round-ups, explainers, social media posts and a daily newsletter, all while being mindful of editorial standards and targeted audiences.
Associate Editors will work with state editors, national editors, and social editors to share, flip, or localize stories that are high performing elsewhere and show potential to have cross-state appeal in partner markets. Together, they identify traffic trends, breaking news, and sourcing strategies to inform aggregated stories and franchises. They also help other reporters identify this content. In addition, Associate Editors assist the national editorial team with CMS issues.
At the direction of their editor, Associate Editors can take on longer-lead projects such as features, work on strategy, and do multiplatform and multimedia work.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Work closely with the national editorial team to set the tone, editorial direction, and daily editorial workflow for the state news site.
Work collaboratively with the editorial staff to develop story ideas, assign articles at the direction of or in the absence of their managing editor, handle problems, and keep the staff on schedule.
Proofread and edit copy as necessary.
Assist in evaluating finalized copy for compliance with policies, style, and tone.
Assist in the writing of a daily newsletter designed for target audiences that aggregates and repackages multiple news stories.
Work with relevant colleagues to maximize audience acquisition across multiple platforms. Address CMS issues as needed.
Engage in original reporting as arranged with their managing editor.
B.S., B.A., or equivalent education in journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field.
3+ years of experience in digital publishing, news reporting, editing or in digital political marketing or communications, including defining and growing a brand and voice through content.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong sense of voice and tone.
Experience with building an engaged cross-platform audience through content (organic and/or paid).
Experience with managing a distributed team.
Familiarity with performance analytics tools such as Omniture or Google Analytics, and with the process of deriving insights therefrom.
Strong management, interpersonal skills, and ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary stakeholders across the company.
Ability to manage time and multi-task under tight deadlines.
A passion for publishing quality news and content in an authentic voice across online and mobile channels.
